Drumming at Belfast City Hall - feedback

Dec 17th, 2007 | By Matt | Category: Events

Hey everybody,

A BIG thank-you to all who came and drummed along with me at the city hall/Christmas market. The weather was cold but there was no rain and we warmed up quickly with the funky rhythms being laid down.

We drew quite a crowd on some occasions and the funny thing was that people started to give us money! My bag started filling up with coins as we played! We gave the money (probably nearly £20) to a charity raising money in the market for an orphanage in Russia when we finished up playing.

We sang some carols with the percussion and even got the crowd to do some nursery rhymes with us too! Thanks again to those who came along, it really was a great time and I thoroughly enjoyed it (as did the people who stopped to listen).

  1. Hi, I have a heart to do street outreaches with drums too! I hope that I can get a little better at drumming soon, so I can start doing it! Hats off to you for getting out there in the winter cold to drum for Jesus. I have a question, what kind of drums were those that the man on the far left is playing, that sit on a stand, and you hit with sticks. They look like little djembes. I haven’t seen those in the U.S.
    Merry Christmas!
    Kristin

  2. Hey there Kristin, Thanks for the comments. Jon is playing a type of Doumbek drum using sticks and other various hitting implements! They have a great sound and are very versatile as well as easy to get around with, unlike me with my congas which weigh a ton and have no bags or handles…

  3. Jon, you may have to correct me if I’m wrong there… thanks! :)

  4. Thanks Matt. I’m wondering if you might know what brand doumbeks he is playing? I might have to look into something like that! I like to hit drums with sticks too. I don’t know if this is helpful, but a I have a big 16″ djembe, and the bag I use is really a “Gator” conga bag (will hold up to a 16″ conga) with a little set of wheels on it. Did not know if you had seen it. It’s wonderful to be able to roll my drums around. Maybe something like that would work for your congas! Blessings,
    Kristin

  5. Hey Kristin,

Thanks for your kind words. The drums I was playing are called Tombecks, manufactured by Remo. I’ve had them about ten years and bought them specifically for their versatility. They work extremely well with sticks, brushes, hands, or rods. They fit well with my kit, but are also well suited on their own for acoustic gigs small clubs.

Unfortunately, I don’t know if Remo still manufactures the Tombeck line. Still, Remo’s world percussion line is very good. Check it out at Remo.com

  6. Whoops, there goes my ‘doumbek’ theory… was kinda close though!

    Thanks Jon for the info!
