Are You Still a Drummer Without Your Drums?
Mar 28th, 2008 | By Matt | Category: Matt's Blog
I find myself in a situation in our church where I am currently not playing drums (we’re in a new church). This is a rather odd and almost ‘fish-out-of-water’ experience for myself as I worship freely and deeply when behind my kit and don’t often have nothing in front of me when worshipping! So this is new for me and a challenge as I find myself tapping nervously on the chair in front of me, much to the annoyance of fellow congregants and my wife! It made me think : do I worship God because I have my drums in front of me, because it is where I am most comfortable? What about when I am not comfortable? Am I able to worship then?
God is worthy of worship simply because of who He is in our lives, regardless of how comfortable or uncomfortable we may feel. It is this truth that has been working at my spirit for many years, wanting me to be free to worship Him with or without my drumming. Wow, and it’s still a challenge!
I suppose the title of this post should really read : “Are you still a worshipper without your drums?”.
The naked drummer
Having to face this new seasonal frontier of worship without my kit, I stand rather naked and ashamed before my King, knowing I worship better with my drums and less when it’s just me… however … I stand amazed at the grace given to me by my God to allow me to enter into His throneroom, His presence and sing my song and pray my prayer and he just says to me, “It’s OK.”
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God — not by works, so that no one can boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9)
It’s what in the heart
So I guess you are still a drummer without your drums because it is what is in your heart that matters, not what you’re hitting or whether you’re playing an instrument or not. It’s all about you and God, your relationship. That’s where the worship comes from, not your skill or your instrument - your instrument can be a means to an end or a tool but it does not replace your heart and your communication with your King.
True worship comes out of a revelation of God to you. When God reveals Himself to you in His glory and grace, you respond to that in a pure and natural reaction.
So, as I embrace the challenge of ‘worshipping naked’ (excuse the tongue in cheek!), I look forward to a new season of worship in my life as I get closer to my King, to hear His heartbeat for my life. I encourage you all to do the same, put down your sticks for one day and lift up your empty hands instead.
May God bless you all, drummers!

Thanks Matt for sharing this so openly with us. I can just say: This is the truth for each one of us. In our relationship with God, we’re in the same situation that you are (the obligation to be a worshipper of HIM constantly).
Thank you for this site where we can look into one another’s lives and learn and be encouraged!
We appreciate you!
