Psalm Drummers was founded by Terl Bryant when a vision he had in 1994 about a gathering of the drummers. He talks about it in more detail on the Psalm Drummer web site.
Terl’s Vision
“I was standing in a semi-circle with a number of other drummers. We were worshipping and declaring God’s kingdom, pounding our drums whilst singing [from Psalm 97], “The Lord reigns, let the earth rejoice.” My head was bowed because the light of God’s presence was so bright. Later in the dream I saw the word ‘PSALM’ written in capital letters. Around the same time I believe the Lord spoke, “it’s time to gather the drummers”.
The drums have a wonderful knack of drawing people together, no matter what race or creed. People from all over respond to the power of rhythm. I believe this natural response is just that…a natural response! God has hard-wired our DNA to create and respond to rhythm.
I had the opportunity to be involved in some drum performances and public drum circle facilitation with The Gathering at a massive Christian youth event in Northern Ireland called Summer Madness. I hadn’t had so much fun with percussion in a long time!

I was going to research and write up the coolest article on the bodhran drum. But after looking online, I realised there is no point in re-inventing the wheel! So, instead I will point you to some pages that I found extremely useful and will post some video clips of my own. I have played the bodhran on numerous occasions and find it a very rhythmical drum that requires a definite amount of skill to truly sound like you actually know what you’re doing! Needless to say, I have not yet attained that level, but I have mastered the art of looking like I know what I’m doing! The bodhran has a beautiful sound and no two bodhrans sound alike due to tensioning differences, moisture in the air and what material or skin is used to envelope the frame.
God has given you a wonderful gift, a great talent, your skill with rhythm. What are you doing with that skill? Perfecting it? Practicing it? Keeping it locked away in a cupboard? Showing off? I think, sometimes, we focus so much on the gift, we forget the Giver! We get carried away with all the excitement, the passion of it all, our drums begin to become more important than anything else. Our focus drifts from the Giver…to the gift. And so the gift becomes our tool for our gain, for our pleasure only.

When you get behind that drum kit, or your congas or percussion rack, you are not alone. God is with you. In the context of worship in the church, you are now in the role of worshipper and warrior. How is your heart and why should it matter? How you play and how you worship is a reflection of what’s in your heart. It is a tell-tale sign of where you’re at in your walk with God.
