Drumming for the nationsWhen I talk about evangelism, I refer to the communicating of the gospel of God to people by whatever means necessary. In the book of Matthew, towards the end, Jesus says to his disciples just before leaving them : “Go and make disciples of all nations…”. Christians refer to this as the Great Commission. There are many ways to evangelise. The most obvious is to preach, to simply tell people. Unfortunately, in some circumstances, preaching isn’t going to do it. Some places on earth are simply “over-evangelised”. The people have heard it so many times, their hearts have become hard and calloused. Their ears have become deaf to the Gospel. This does not mean that God cannot do anything. Other ways of reaching people need to be employed. Man needs to become a little bit more pro-active. The city of Nineveh, God could’ve saved that Himself with no help at all, but He wanted Jonah to play an active role in getting the people to hear the message. God wants us to be active in our Faith.

Play with the bassist, not against. With more inexperienced musicians (I am referring to drummers and bass guitarists now), it takes time for the relationship between bass and drums to form properly. At first there is no relationship, as far as the drummer and bassist is concerned. But as time goes on, and the diligence of practice begins to show improvement and progression, the two players start to become aware that a connection exists between drums and bass. The beauty of it all is when you start to explore that relationship and the musical opportunities that present themselves for the co-existence of these two partners in rhythm reveal a vast landscape of musical expression and, as always, discipline.Drums and bass belong together. That is why, practically, it makes sense to have them next to each other in a band setting. They compliment each other and support one another. Have you ever been in a church where there is a bass guitar but no drums? Or where there are drums and no bass guitar. I have played on numerous occasions with no bassist and can honestly tell you: something’s missing!

DrummersAs a drummer, you’re part of a ‘brotherhood’ of sorts. You have the gift of rhythm and you share a common bond with thousands and thousands of other drummers worldwide to whom God has given the same gift. As Christian drummers, you not only have the bond of family in Christ connecting you, you also have the ‘rhythm-connection’ linking you together.Jesus said that people would know that you are Christians by your love for one another. Now, what about Christian drummers and how they behave towards one another, and even towards non-Christian drummers?
