The new year is now upon us and The Christian Drummer web site is in its third year now. So much has changed since I started the site. Every year, I take it up a notch and do something else with it for the sake of encouraging and building up Christian drummers worldwide. So this year, I got some new ideas.

Of course, these are just ideas and whether they will be implemented or not is another story. But here they are off the top of my head and in no particular order:

• Better t-shirts with more exposure on the site
• Drum tabs to popular worship songs
• Better integration with friend sites like ‘Tobosari Crestini’ and ‘Drummer For Christ’ and ‘Drummers for Jesus’
• More resources for Christian drummers in the form of books and videos
• Video clips from myself
• More interviews with drummers from around the world, not just famous ones!

These are dependent on time permitting and if anyone else is happy to be a part of the site in the form of contributing articles or other resources too. I am always looking for new ideas and contributors to the site.

So, friends and drummers worldwide, welcome to 2009!

I found Scott Waldrep whilst scouring MySpace for other Christian drummers and thought it would be good to get to know him better and find out more about his thoughts on drumming in a worship team. Tree 63 was formed in 1996. Their first album released in the United States, Tree63, won the GMA Dove Award for “Rock Album of the Year” in 2001. The current band members are Jon Ellis (Vox, Guitar & Piano), Daniel Ornellas (Bass) and Darryl Swart (Drums).

Originally from Durban in South Africa, the band are now based in the US (Nashville, Tennessee) and do extensive touring worldwide, bringing music and the news of the Gospel to all they encounter.

From the Tree63 MySpace page:
“Each day is full of constant curveballs and soul-searching, but out of our most vulnerable and defenseless periods often come the most valuable lessons of character, spiritual sharpening and insight to the questions that weigh heavy on our hearts. Some of our music is prophetic, some contemplative, some confrontational – all worship ultimately. Our music is about God, about our love for Jesus, about some of the frustrations that come from being alive with Christ in a world dead with sin. We believe that life is about more than music. It is about people and we would love to get to know you and hear your story.”

I was able to get in touch with Darryl and pester him with some questions while he was touring and playing all over the place and he was gracious enough to answer all my questions! The best part was that Tree63 were in Belfast in April and I was able to catch up with Darryl to have a good chat about all things drumming and beyond! Continue reading »

I had the incredible privilege of being able to get (and stay) in touch with William Glover, one of the founding members and drummer of the band Petra. What an opportunity! This guy was bashing skin before I was even born! Awesome! Petra literally rocked my world from their very early stuff like the 70’s rock to the late 90’s. I just couldn’t get enough of the lyrics, the beat, the heart behind it all and the sincerity of the band and its members. I posed 5 questions to Bill and he graciously answered them all!
